First Aid Tips During an Asthma Attack

Asthma attacks are life-threatening and have killed many people already, but most of the time, these deaths could have been avoided. So, here are some tips to keep in mind if you have an asthma attack:

  • First and foremost, you need to try to stay calm and sit up straight. Pull out your reliever inhaler and take one puff every 30 seconds to 1 minute. Repeat this until ten puffs. If your asthma attack feels worse or if you do not see an improvement after those ten puffs, immediately call for an ambulance. Do not be afraid to call for help while waiting.
  • If, after 10 minutes, your symptoms are getting worse or are not improving and the ambulance is still not there, repeat taking one puff for every 30 seconds to 1 minute until ten puffs. After doing so, contact the ambulance again to follow up if they have not yet arrived.
  • If possible, take all the details of your medications or your asthma action plan to the hospital. If you think you don’t need an ambulance as your symptoms are improving, see an asthma nurse or a GP on the same day instead.
